Christmas Magic in the Magic City

Billings, nicknamed the Magic City many years ago, is truly magical during the holidays. For most of us, the season has more to do with family and traditions than securing the perfect gift.

Some of the local favorites for holiday traditions include touring the Moss Mansion and viewing holiday lights across the city. The Gazette will publish a map of the best lights to better plan a route. The best, traditionally include Christmas Wreath Lane, Land of the Misfit Toys, Candy Cane Lane, and the luminaries on Mariposa Lane. My local favorite was always the Jurovich Home on Granite Avenue and Christmas Wreath Lane (established in 1960).

Other local traditions include the Festival of Trees. This event has been well attended to raise money for Child Abuse Prevention since 1986. The event is the first week of December, with a live auction on Thursday and a public viewing the following weekend. The artistic collaboration and creativity in decorating the many trees brings in auction prices of $500 to $2,500 each.

The Christmas Stroll also happens the first weekend in December. The Yellowstone Art Museum and local studio’s are open downtown on Friday night with local shops staying open until 9pm. There is usually music, hot chocolate, and a festive atmosphere under Skypoint.

The Chase Hawks Memorial Rodeo is the 3rd weekend in December. This great fundraiser helps families in need and brings the cowboys who have just finished the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas to Billings to compete. This event also brings many rural families into town for a weekend of shopping and family fun.

As a retail center for over 600,000 folks around the Billings area, shopping for family gifts brings it’s own tradition. From the craft fair at the Shrine Auditorium, Santa photos at Rimrock Mall, to ferris wheel rides at Scheels, many families have created their own sense of what makes Christmas, Christmas.

Enjoy the magic of the Christmas Season with your family, remembering that the true magic happens with the Birth of our Saviour, Jesus. Peace be on to you! Trina
